Joe Walsh

On this website, you will find a selection of my print, online, and audio reporting work.

I am a print journalist in the Boston area, reporting on local government, economic development, and downtown news for the Boston Guardian, the city's largest weekly paper.

I began reporting on Greater Boston while a student at Tufts University. As a freelance correspondent for GateHouse Media, I reported on local government and community dynamics for more than a dozen daily and weekly newspapers. And I interned for two public radio stations — WBUR and WGBH — where I was responsible for finding and interviewing sources, covering  events, writing scripts that aired on the stations’ local newscasts, and editing audio for air.

I was also active in student journalism, eventually serving as managing editor of the Tufts Daily, where I edited and fact-checked everything from hard news and investigative features to sports coverage and avant-garde fashion reviews. Among the highlights of that semester, I helped oversee an investigative story about serious mistreatment of a Tufts janitor, and I was part of the team that faced down a frivolous legal threat from Anthony Scaramucci. After that, following a mid-2018 financial crisis, I became responsible for the paper’s business operations for one semester, steering the organization from deficit to long-term sustainability.

At Tufts, I majored in international relations, with a focus on the Middle East & South Asia and a minor in economics. I also studied Arabic, with a goal of proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic as well as Levantine dialect. Despite this international focus, I have consistently enjoyed reporting on small communities. Municipal government, while occasionally dry, is crucial and often overlooked, and I strive to help readers understand how their community is managed.
